DAN NEUHARTH, PH.D., MFT, is a best-selling author and licensed marriage and family therapist with 25 years of experience helping clients deal with unhealthy narcissism. Dr. Neuharth wrote the national bestseller, If You Had Controlling Parents: How to Make Peace with Your Past and Take Your Place in the World (HarperCollins, 1998), based on original research with adults raised in narcissistic and controlling family systems. He writes as an expert blogger on narcissism for both PsychologyToday.com and PsychCentral.com. Dr. Neuharth is a frequent presenter to both professional and consumer audiences, and has appeared on national media including Oprah, Good Morning America and CNN. Based in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Neuharth holds licenses as a marriage and family therapist in California, Florida, Texas and Virginia. He is also a trained family law mediator in California. His second book, Secrets You Keep From Yourself: How To Stop Sabotaging Your Happiness (St. Martin’s Press, 2004), explores how to overcome self-deception and self-sabotaging behavior. Dr. Neuharth holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and master’s degrees in both clinical psychology and journalism. He is a clinical fellow in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He is the immediate past president of the Marin County Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and a lifetime member of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy. Dr. Neuharth is an award-winning journalist with print, broadcast and online media experience, and taught journalism at the universities of Florida, Hawaii, San Francisco, and San Diego State.
