Yolanda R Gallegos commenced her legal career as a fellow at Georgetown University Law Center's Institute for Public Representation. She was one of only three fellows selected in a nationwide search for the paid fellowship. That same year, the D.C. Bar selected her for its Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year Award. From Georgetown, Ms. Gallegos worked in private practice and developed an expertise in higher education law. The first ten years after law school, she practiced in Washington, D.C., and served as the president of the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia in 1997. In 1998, Ms. Gallegos established her law firm, Gallegos Legal Group, and continued representing colleges and universities. She has represented private sector schools throughout the country for 30 years. Her practice focuses on guiding postsecondary schools through critical events such as governmental and accreditor investigations, corporate expansion and downsizing, and operational adjustments required in response to regulatory changes. She has successfully defended dozens of institutions in program reviews and audits before the U.S. Department of Education and she has extensive experience in accreditation and state licensing. Ms. Gallegos received her J.D. degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law and her LL.M. degree in advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center. She is a member of the District of Columbia, New Mexico, and Illinois bars.
