Lorie Gerkey has over thirty years of experience in the field of special education. During her years in public education, Ms. Gerkey was a teacher for students with disabilities, and a district level student services administrator for small, medium and large school districts in Arizona. As an attorney, she focuses on supporting school districts and charter schools in the areas of special education and disability law. Before opening her own practice, Ms. Gerkey practiced school law in New Mexico for almost five years. During that time, she continued to support public schools in navigating the legal requirements of serving students with disabilities, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ms. Gerkey has presented on special education issues at numerous conferences, including Arizona Council for Exceptional Children/Arizona Council of Administrators for Special Education (AZCEC/AZCASE), New Mexico School Psychologist Association, New Mexico School Boards Association, Arizona Charter Schools Association, and many individual school districts and charter schools across Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming. The trainings have included topics such as discipline under the IDEA, implementing accommodations/modifications, prior written notice, drafting IEP goals and objectives, transitioning from Part C to Part B, functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans, special education case law updates, Section 504, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. She has been admitted to practice law and is a member of the state bars of Arizona, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming and the Colorado Bar Association, with admittance to practice before the New Mexico Supreme Court. Along with holding her Juris Doctorate, Ms. Gerkey has earned her Bachelor of Science degree in special education, her master's degree in educational administration, and holds her superintendent and principal licenses in Arizona. She has been a long-standing member of AZCEC and AZCASE.
