Maine CLE Requirements
What are ME MCLE requirements?
UPDATED MCLE REQUIREMENTS IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONAVIRUS: The Board of Overseers of the Bar has suspended the in-person requirement for harassment and discrimination credit. This credit, along with 7 of the 12 required credits, must still be earned with activities approved for Live CLE credit (i.e. online seminar, webinar or interactive webinar). The Supreme Judicial Court extended the automatic grace period established by Maine Bar Rule 5(l)(1) for attorneys to comply with their MCLE requirements. The grace period now runs until 4:30 p.m. on April 30, 2021. Attorneys lacking 2020 credit hours will be able to earn and report until April 30, 2021.
Maine attorneys are required to complete 12.00 credit hours every year. Members must fulfill at least 7.0 credit hours of their CLE requirement with activities approved for Live CLE credit.
What are ME MCLE specialty credit requirements?
Specialty credit hours must be taken as Live.
Legal Ethics or Professional Responsibility: 1.00 credit hour (required) (credit can be earned using the formats considered live listed below)
Harassment/Discrimination: 1.00 credit hour (required) (credit can be earned by attending a live seminar only)
When is the ME MCLE compliance deadline?
In order to transition from a fiscal year to a calendar year CLE reporting system, attorneys will report for calendar years 2018 (11 credits) and the 2019 CLE requirements (12) credits, for a total of 23 credits beginning January 1, 2020.
Starting January 1, 2020, and each year thereafter, attorneys shall demonstrate CLE for the prior calendar year.
How do I report my ME MCLE?
NBI, Inc. will report your credit to the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar. A Verified Certificate of Completion will be sent to you. Please retain for your records.
Attorneys are responsible for tracking and reporting their own CLE credits. A Verified Certificate of Completion will be sent to you. Please submit a signed copy of the certificate to the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar and retain a copy for your records.
What is allowed for Self-Study credit?
Maximum 5.00 credit hours.
