RICHARD J. MURPHY is the owner of the special education law firm, Law Office of Richard J. Murphy, PLC in Scottsdale, Arizona. Since graduating from the University of Notre Dame Law School, he has been a practicing attorney for over 20 years with the last 10 years as a special education attorney. With his special education practice, Mr. Murphy has represented clients in IEP meetings, mediations, due process, appeals, and OCR complaints. He prevailed in a 9th Circuit appeal on Section 504 disability discrimination claims. Mr. Murphy advocated for passing an Arizona law limiting the use of restraint and seclusion in school. Prior to practicing special education law, he represented hundreds of clients in personal injury and workers' compensation actions, including wrongful death asbestos cases, medical malpractice, construction injuries, auto accidents, and nursing home abuse and neglect cases. Mr. Murphy is admitted to practice in Arizona, New York, and Illinois; and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a member of the Council of Parent Advocates and Attorneys (COPAA).
