EMILY GOODWIN KIME is the founder and president of Vail Legal Technologies. She has extensive experience as a trial technology consultant and has worked in the legal support field for more than a decade. After earning her undergraduate degree from Miami University (B.F.A., summa cum laude), Ms. Kime began working at a private law firm as a paralegal and then as a systems administrator. During that time, she also completed her Masters in Teaching at Marshall University and went on to pursue her interest in art education by teaching art and design to high school students. In 2002, she merged her formal training in design, photography, and teaching with her expertise in legal administration and technology solutions by joining Katz Consulting Group, where she worked as a trial consultant until launching Vail Legal Technologies in September, 2004. Calling upon her background in education, Ms. Kime specializes in assisting attorneys with trial presentation and legal software training. She uses her unique combination of experiences and talents to advise her clients on the myriad of technological solutions for the legal profession. EVAN R. KIME is an attorney with Bowles Rice McDavid Graff & Love LLP, where he practices in the area of litigation. He is a member of the West Virginia, the West Virginia State and the Kanawha County bar associations and The Judge John A. Field, Jr. American Inn of Court. Mr. Kime earned his B.S. degree from Alderson-Broaddus College and his J.D. degree from West Virginia University College of Law, where he was a legal research and writing teaching assistant. NICHOLAS P. MOONEY II is a member of the law firm of Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC, where his primary area of practice is consumer credit and protection litigation in federal and state courts. He has devoted all of his time for the last ten years to that practice area. In the past, he also has practiced energy law and general litigation. He also serves as national counsel and managing local counsel in litigation involving state and federal consumer protection laws pending in various states and has practiced in many diverse areas of litigation, including corporate finance, product liability, professional liability and criminal defense. Mr. Mooney is a member of the American (co-chair of a nationwide subcommittee focusing on the study and understanding of courts decisions on pretrial practice) and the Kanawha County (second vice president) bar associations. He was co-author of "Post- Cuomo: The Floodgates Have Not Opened and Watters Still Predominates" and "Attorney General Objections to Proposed Class Action Settlements Under the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005." Mr. Mooney earned his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Marshall University and his J.D. degree from West Virginia University College of Law. NATALIE C. SCHAEFER is an attorney with Francis Nelson & Brison, PLLC, where her practice has focused primarily on defense litigation, including catastrophic loss and wrongful death, as well as the defense of national manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of consumer products involved in construction, mining and industrial accidents. Ms. Schaefer has also defended energy clients in accident investigation and litigation, as well as, defense of companies in suit under the worker's compensation immunity exception "deliberate intention" exception, among others. She has also defended liability claims involving civil rights, public entities and government agencies. Ms. Schaefer earned her B.A. degree from West Virginia University and her J.D. degree from West Virginia University College of Law. Her published works include, "The Unusual Suspects: Unlikely Players in the Product Liability Arena," Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia and "Administrative Preclusion: Litigation Ammunition?" Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia. Ms. Schaefer is a member of the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia, the Defense Research Institute (Product Liability, Insurance Law and Trial Tactics committees) and The West Virginia Bar Association. L. MICHELLE SHAMBLIN is an executive paralegal to the managing attorney of James F. Humphreys & Associates, L.C. She mainly deals with toxic torts, tobacco litigation and asbestos litigation. Ms. Shamblin is a former instructor at West Virginia Junior College, where she taught effective speaking. She earned her R.B.A. degree from West Virginia State University, her associate’s degree in criminal justice from West Virginia State University, and holds a certificate for Executive Leadership Strategies from the University of Notre Dame. Ms. Shamblin is currently enrolled at West Virginia University, where she is working towards her master’s degree in social work. She is also a STARS certified trainer for the State of West Virginia. Ms. Shamblin is a member of the American Association for Justice. RUTH SHEFF is a litigation paralegal with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC, with more than 30 years of experience in the legal profession. She assists in the firms litigation and business departments, where her areas of concentration in the firm include litigation (plaintiff and defense); interviewing and locating witnesses; obtaining written and oral statements; summarizing depositions and other documents; preparing discovery requests and responses; obtaining and analyzing bank, employment/personnel, medical and insurance records; witness investigations; trial preparation, including preparation of exhibits and jury research; preparing and assisting with preparation of pleadings; conducting lien and UCC searches; and registering foreign judgments. Ms. Sheff earned her degree in legal studies from West Virginia State College and attended Marshall University's Paralegal Program. She is the interim program director and volunteer for Kanawha County CASA Inc., a court appointed special Advocate for abused and neglected children in Kanawha County, the secretary/treasurer of the Board of West Virginia CASA, and a legal Aid West Virginia Volunteer.
