AMBER L. BARBER is co-chair of Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC. Ms. Barber earned her B.A. degree, cum laude, from St. Lawrence University and her J.D. degree from Albany Law School of Union University. She concentrates her practice in matrimonial and family law, divorce and civil union dissolution, asset valuation, negotiation of custody and financial settlement agreements and qualified domestic relations orders. Ms. Barber provides comprehensive advice about the fairness and equity of proposed settlement agreements and has considerable litigation experience. Her goal is to help her clients obtain a resolution which is in the children's best interests, and to secure a fair and equitable resolution with regard to their financial situation. Ms. Barber currently serves as treasurer for the Chittenden County Bar Association and liaison to the family law section of the Vermont Bar Association. She also is a member of the Board of Managers for the Vermont Board Association. Prior to that, Ms. Barber served as a member and past-president on the Board of Managers for the Young Lawyers Division. She is a frequent lecturer on all aspects of family law, including complex litigation. Ms. Barber also serves as a guardian ad litem for family court cases and teaches pro se education classes for the family court. KURT M. HUGHES is a partner with Murdoch Hughes & Twarog Attorneys at Law, P.C., where he practices in the areas of family law, adoptions, assisted fertility law and criminal defense. Mr. Hughes is a member of the Vermont Bar Association, the Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Bar Association and the Vermont Association of Justice. He also is the only practicing member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys in Vermont and current charter member of the academy's new sister organization, the American Academy of Assisted Reproductive Technology Attorneys (AAARTA). Mr. Hughes earned his B.A. degree from Colgate University and his J.D. degree from Vermont Law School. DEBORAH LASHMAN is the founder and sole proprietor of DEBORAH LASHMAN, P.C., in Burlington, Vermont. The law firm provides legal services in all aspects of family law, including relief from abuse matters, divorce, post-divorce, parentage, child support, custody, adoption and juvenile matters. Legal representation is also provided in probate matters, including wills and guardianship, and in criminal defense. A former domestic violence prosecutor, Ms. Lashman often works with victims of sexual and domestic abuse. She earned her bachelors and Master of Science degrees from the University of Massachusetts, and her J.D. degree from Vermont Law School. She is admitted to practice in the state of Vermont and before the U.S. District Court of Vermont. NANCI A. SMITH is the owner of Nanci A. Smith, Esq. PLLC, a law firm exclusively dedicated to resolving complex family law issues through litigation, mediation, collaboration or early neutral evaluation. Ms. Smith has worked in private firms in Montpelier, Vermont and Rutland, Vermont. In addition to her family law practice, she engaged in general civil and criminal litigation and civil rights law. Ms. Smith also worked at Vermont Legal Aid, Inc. representing victims of domestic violence, and people with serious psychiatric diagnoses in mental health civil commitment proceedings. She earned her B.A. degree from the University of California in San Diego and her J.D. and MSEL degrees from Vermont Law School. Ms. Smith teaches the " Pro se Education Course" on family law for Washington County Family Court and represents children as counsel or as their guardian ad litem upon request of the court. She is a member of the Vermont Bar Association and the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association. Ms. Smith is a board member for both Vermont Legal Aid, Inc. and Legal Services Law Line of Vermont.
