ROBERT L. BURNS is a partner with Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, where he focuses on patent litigation in the U.S. district courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has managed large, complex litigations before the Eastern District of Virginia, the Eastern District of Texas, the Northern District of California, and the District of Delaware. Mr. Burns has jury trial experience as a first-chair and a second-chair litigator. With experience in more than 60 district court litigations, Mr. Burns has developed a proficiency in handling major patent litigations in terms of strategy, discovery, oral argument, and trial management. He also has successfully enforced intellectual property rights in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Germany. Mr. Burns worked as an aerospace engineer for General Dynamics and Boeing. He serves as an adjunct professor at George Mason University School of Law teaching patent litigation and dispute resolution and as an instructor at the University of Virginia Law School Trial Advocacy Institute. Mr. Burns has represented several clients pro bono in both civil and criminal matters, including espionage, homicide, and double-homicide cases. He served as the research assistant for the Honorable Howard Markey, former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Burns served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Computer and Information Law. He received the Virginia Super Lawyers Award by his peers, ranking him in the top five percent of lawyers in Virginia and West Virginia (2006-2008). He appeared in the 2007 and 2008 editions of Washington DC Super Lawyers and was named as one of the top 30 lawyers in Washington, D.C. specializing in intellectual property litigation. Mr. Burns is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Computer Law Association. He is admitted to practice in Illinois; District of Columbia; Virginia; and before the U.S. District Court, Eastern District, Virginia; the U.S. Court of Appeals Federal Circuit; the U.S. Court of Appeals 4th Circuit; and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Burns earned his B.S. degree from Purdue University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from John Marshall Law School. JOSEPH PETER DRENNAN is a sole practitioner in Alexandria where his practice includes general civil litigation - both trial and appellate, libel and slander litigation, personal injury, commercial litigation, bad faith litigation, civil rights litigation, litigation on behalf of the victims of state-sponsored terrorism, and defense of claims brought under the Alien Tort Claims Act, as well as general criminal defense. Mr. Drennan earned his B.A. degree, cum laude, from the University of Richmond and his J.D. degree from the Catholic University of America. He is a member of The District of Columbia Bar, the Virginia State Bar, the Alexandria Bar Association, the Trial Lawyers Association of Metropolitan Washington, D.C., and numerous federal district courts and courts of appeal. He also is an adjunct professor at The University of Baltimore, where he teaches a course in health care law and risk management. JOHN EDWARDS HARRISON is the president of the law firm of Harrison & Hughes, P.C., where he practices in the areas of civil and criminal law, corporate law and banking law. Mr. Harrison earned his B.A. degree from Georgetown University and his J.D. degree from George Washington University. He is an adjunct professor for the Graduate School of Business in Georgetown University and also at George Mason School of Law where he teaches advanced trial tactics. Mr. Harrison has spoken for various professional groups including the Defense Advanced Research Products Agency (DARPA) on "Combat on an Urban Environment" and the Grand Rounds presentation for the University of Tennessee on Law. He also has lectured for the Organization of American States (O.A.S.) on “America Law Joint Ventures & Commercial Transactions for Central American business people.” Mr. Harrison is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. RICHARD MORGAN is a sole practitioner with more than a decade of practice and more than 40 jury trials, including high profile robbery, arson, sex crimes, and narcotics cases. He has advised or co-counseled numerous other trials around the state and is much sought after for his expertise in evidentiary and presentation strategies to jurors. Most recently he conducted an arson jury trial in northern Virginia which involved numerous well-known witnesses and received extensive media attention. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs. Mr. Morgan is a member of the Virginia Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar. ADAM W. SMITH is a principal with McCandlish and Lillard, where his litigation practice is concentrated in the representation of self-insureds, health care providers, insurance companies and other clients in the defense of products liability, medical malpractice, legal malpractice, and general tort liability claims. Mr. Smith is admitted to the Bars of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Ohio; the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and District of Columbia Circuit; the U.S. Court of Federal Claims; and the U.S. District courts of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and the Eastern District of Virginia. He graduated from The Ohio State University, with honors, and earned his J.D. degree, with high distinction, from Ohio Northern University. MICHAEL W. TOMPKINS is senior counsel in the law firm of Rich, Rosenthal, Brincefield, Manitta, Dzubin & Kroeger, LLP, where he practices in the area of civil litigation, with a heavy emphasis on real estate litigation. He possesses more than 17 years of experience and is currently an adjunct professor teaching computer law at George Mason University. Mr. Tompkins is a past member of the faculty of the Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law, where he taught legal writing and research to first-year law students. He is licensed in Virginia, District of Columbia, and Maryland, and is a member of the Alexandria Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, and the District of Columbia Bar. Mr. Tompkins earned his B.A. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and his J.D. degree from the College of William and Mary.
