JAMES P. ALDER is a partner in the Salt Lake City law firm of Alder & Robb, P.C. He has been an attorney for more than 14 years and focuses his practice on wills and trusts, business law, probate and trust administration, elder law and related areas. Mr. Alder is a member of the Salt Lake Estate Planning Council, WealthCounsel and the Utah State Bar (Estate Planning Section and Elder Law Section). He also is a member of the Board of Directors for the Utah Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and serves on the advisory committee for Best Buddies, a special needs organization. Mr. Alder has been named as a Utah Legal Elite in Estate Planning by Utah Business Magazine. He earned his B.S. and L.L.M degrees from Utah State University and his J.D. degree from Brigham Young University. MARK J. MORRISE is a shareholder with the Salt Lake City law firm of Callister Nebeker & McCullough, where his law practice focuses on trusts and estates, estate and gift tax planning, trust and estate administration, asset protection, charitable planning, planning for closely held businesses, and legacy planning. He assists clients with traditional estate plans and also counsels high net worth clients in the use of sophisticated planning techniques, including family LLCs and limited partnerships, sales to irrevocable grantor trusts, and grantor-retained annuity trusts (GRATs). A fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and a Certified Legacy Advisor, Mr. Morrise is a frequent presenter at estate planning seminars, and has published articles on estate planning in Zions Community Magazine and the "Money" section of Salt Lake Magazine. He also is the author of two websites, www.utahestateplans.com and www.utahprobate.com, which deal with estate planning issues. Mr. Morrise is a past chair of the Estate Planning Section of the Utah State Bar, a member of the Salt Lake Estate Planning Council, and a member of the board of the Salt Lake City chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. He earned his B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from Brigham Young University and his J.D. degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. LANGDON T. OWEN JR. is a shareholder in the Salt Lake City law firm of Parsons, Kinghorn & Harris, P.C., where he practices in the areas of corporate law, limited liability company, partnership, business structure and finance, commercial transactions, real estate, estate planning, taxation law, and health care law. He is a frequent speaker to professional groups on topics regarding taxation, estate planning and business, and health law. Mr. Owen earned his A.B. degree, with high distinction, from the University of California at Berkeley and his J.D. degree from the University of Utah. He is a member of the Utah State Bar (member, Fee Arbitration Committee; sections on Estate Planning, Taxation and Corporations), the American Bar Association and the American Health Lawyers Association. Mr. Owen has been practicing law since 1977. KENDALL R. SURFASS is vice chairman, secretary & general counsel for Equitable Life & Casualty Ins. Co. in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is the chief legal officer of the company, a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Steering Committee, Executive Committee and Risk Management Committee. Mr. Surfass's responsibilities include litigation risk avoidance and management, corporate and regulatory compliance oversight, product development, marketing support review, strategic planning, corporate communications and government relations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Utah Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association, the Council for Affordable Health Insurance and the Utah Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Mr. Surfass was co-chair of the Long Term Care Technical Advisory Group to the Utah Health Policy Commission. In 2005 he was selected as a Utah delegate to the White House Conference on Aging. Mr. Surfass is a member of the Utah State Bar, the Iowa State Bar Association, and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He earned his J.D. degree from Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.
