MELISSA M. BEAN is an attorney with the law firm of Parsons Behle & Latimer, where she practices in the areas of family law, appellate practice, arbitration, and legal ethics and professional responsibility. Her published article, "Fatal Flaws in the Food and Drug Administration's Drug Approval Formula," can be found at 2003 Ut. L.Rev. 881. During law school, Ms. Bean tutored fellow students in tort and constitutional law and served as the president of the Women's Law Caucus. With a fellow classmate, she won "Best Brief" at the First Amendment Moot Court competition at Vanderbilt University. Ms. Bean has worked as an intern for the attorney general in the Child Protection and Criminal Appeals divisions. Since graduating from law school, she worked for two years as a law clerk to Hon. Ronald E. Nehring of the Utah Supreme Court. Ms. Bean was a volunteer board member from 2003 to 2005 at the Tracy Aviary and is currently a board member on the S.J. Quinney College of Law Young Alumni Board. She earned her B.A. and master's degrees from the University of Utah, and her J.D. degree from the S.J. Quinney College of Law, where she served as a senior staff member of the Utah Law Review. JARED T. HALES is a member of Parsons Behle & Latimer's Family Law Group. He focuses his practice on assisting individuals with divorce, property settlements, alimony, prenuptial agreements, child custody and support, paternity, modifications, enforcement of decrees, and adoptions. Mr. Hales is also experienced in helping individuals with closely held businesses navigate the divorce process. He is a member of the Utah State Bar Family Law Executive Committee and an Instructor in the Political Science Department at Utah State University. KRISTY L. HANSON is an attorney with MacArthur Heder & Metler, where her main areas of practice are domestic relations, child custody, adoption law and litigation. Ms. Hanson is a member of the Utah State Bar and American Bar Association. She earned her B.A. degree from Brigham Young University and her J.D. degree, cum laude, from American University, Washington College of Law. EMILY SMOAK is a shareholder in the Salt Lake City office of Durham Jones & Pinegar, PC. Ms. Smoak has been an attorney for more than 15 years and focuses her practice on family law. She is the author of the articles “How to Protect Your Business from Your Marriage” (Nov, 2009) and "His or Hers, Untangling Separate Assets from Marital Assets" (April, 2010) published in the Utah Business Magazine. Ms. Smoak also was named Legal Elite for 2010 and 2011 in Family Law. She is a member of the Utah State Bar and the American Bar Association. Ms. Smoak earned her B.A. degree, cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts and her J.D. degree from the University of Maine School of Law.
