August 4 - Memphis KENNETH R. BESSER graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, with a Bachelor of Science degree and attended two years of medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine.He graduated law school, cum laude, from the University of Memphis, where he served as both the administrative editor and research editor of the Law Review . Mr. Besser first worked as a lawyer at the Memphis firm of Burch, Porter and Johnson, and then began a private practice. After moving to Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Besser focused his legal practice on federal and state health care regulation compliance and operations for a large variety of physicians and medical groups at the same time he served as practice administrator for a two-physician primary care office. He has practiced patent law in Tel Aviv, Israel, and has also established a captive debt collection agency based in Jerusalem for an international conglomerate, IDT. Since returning to live in Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. Besser commuted to his private practice in Memphis, Tennessee. Since 2007, Mr. Besser has focused almost exclusively on the area of medical malpractice as a plaintiff's attorney in the Law Offices of Al H. Thomas and Associates and now practices at his own office, The Besser Law Firm. He is a published author of several legal articles in Memphis Lawyer magazine, the most recent of which is a part of The Rookies' Roundtable Series focusing on evaluating and prosecuting medical malpractice cases. MARTY R. PHILLIPS is a member of the law firm Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell, P.L.C., with offices in Jackson and Memphis. His areas of practice include medical malpractice defense, hospital liability defense, products liability, commercial litigation and class actions. Mr. Phillips earned his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Union University and his J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He is past president of the Jackson-Madison County Bar Association, and a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute and the International Association of Defense Counsel. JOHN G. WHEELER serves as litigation chair for the firm Mitchell, McNutt, & Sams, P.A. He practices exclusively in litigation, focusing on the defense of medical and other professional liability claims, pharmaceutical and other product liability litigation, and other personal injury and general litigation matters. Mr. Wheeler has defended medical and pharmaceutical litigation for health care providers and major pharmaceutical companies in multiple jurisdictions. He earned his B.B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from Mississippi State University and his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Mr. Wheeler is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts of Mississippi and Tennessee, the U.S. Supreme Court of Appeals 5th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the author of the note, "Class Action - Bankruptcy - Bankruptcy - Judge May Exercise Discretion to Allow a Representative to File a Class Proof of Claim in a Bankruptcy Proceeding," 59 Mississippi Law Journal, 1989. Mr. Wheeler is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an associate with the American Board of Trial Advocates and has been recognized in Mid-South Super Lawyers (2006-2009) and The Best Lawyers in America (2007-2010). He is a member of the Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association, The Mississippi Bar, and Tennessee Bar Association. August 6 - Nashville CLINTON L. KELLY is a partner in the Hendersonville law firm of Kelly, Kelly & Allman, where his practice is devoted to medical malpractice. Mr. Kelly is certified as a medical malpractice specialist by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education. He also is board certified in medical malpractice law by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys. Mr. Kelly wrote "Kelly on Malpractice (2008)", which is a treatise on medical malpractice. He has spoken at numerous CLE seminars involving scientific evidence and medical malpractice and has written numerous articles related to medico-legal issues. Mr. Kelly earned his B.A. degree from Rhodes College and his J.D. degree from Memphis University, where he was a member of the Law Review and the Moot Court Board. He is a member of the Tennessee Association for Justice (Board of Governors), the Southern Trial Lawyers Association (Board of Governors), and the Professional Negligence Section of the American Association for Justice, and a diplomat with the National College of Advocacy. JAMES E. LOOPER JR. is the co-managing partner of Hall Booth Smith & Slover, P.C.'s Nashville office. Mr. Looper practices in the areas of medical malpractice defense, professional liability defense, licensing issues and healthcare. He earned his B.S. and B.A. degrees from Furman University, and his J.D. degree from Mercer University. He also attended the University of South Carolina Graduate School in Pharmacology and the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine. Mr. Looper handles all aspects of litigation and advises clients on pre-litigation strategies. He has spoken at a number of conferences regarding medical liability, litigation and trial strategy, medical record confidentiality and healthcare regulatory issues. Mr. Looper is licensed to practice law in Georgia and Tennessee, and is admitted to all courts of record in those states, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a member of a number of professional organizations.
