RICHARD W. BUHRMAN is the principal attorney of the Chattanooga law firm of Buhrman & Associates, P.C., where his practice focuses on the areas of taxation, estate planning and probate, and corporate and commercial matters. He has been practicing law for 45 years, and is a frequent speaker on the topics of estate planning and taxation before various professional groups, including the Tennessee Bar Association. Mr. Buhrman was the chairman of Duke University Estate Planning Council for 14 years, where he has lectured on matters related to post-mortem estate planning. He earned his A.B. degree, with honors, from the University of Chattanooga, his LL.B. degree from Duke University School of Law and his LL.M. degree from George Washington University School of Law. Mr. Buhrman is a member of the Estate Planning Council of Chattanooga, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and has been designated as an Accredited Estate Planner by the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. ALAN L. CATES is a member of the tax and estate planning practice group in the Chattanooga office of Husch Blackwell LLP, where he practices in tax and estate planning. He has been engaged in the private practice of law in Chattanooga since 1975 and has been licensed as an attorney since September 1972. Mr. Cates is a past president of the Chattanooga Bar Association. He has presented at events throughout the country as well as for the Tennessee Bar Association and several local bar associations. Mr. Cates also has given presentations to estate planning councils, exempt organizations, the Annual Convention of the Georgia Society of CPAs, the Tennessee Society of CPAs, estate planning and giving seminars at events for Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and the University of New Haven, and currently serves as a faculty member for the National Planned Giving Institute at the College of William & Mary. He earned his B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee and his J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Cates was employed by the University of Tennessee as its planned giving officer. He has been on the faculty of the National Planned Giving Institute at the College of William & Mary for more than 25 years. By invitation of various professional and tax exempt organizations, he is a frequent speaker on topics involving taxation, estate planning, business succession planning, and probate and trust issues. Mr. Cates is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and a fellow of the Chattanooga Bar Foundation. He also serves with a group of other attorneys in Tennessee on the Tennessee Probate Study Committee in reviewing and commenting on pending legislation in the areas of trusts, estates and related issues. JERRY N. ESTES is a member of the Jerry N. Estes Law Offices, PLLC, where his main areas of practice are property law, business law, wills, trusts and estates, probate, personal injury and civil litigation. Several professional magazines have published his writings and he wrote a bi-weekly newspaper column in a daily newspaper for many years. For more than 20 years, Mr. Estes has lectured and taught extensively for the National College for District Attorneys, Cleveland State Community College Police Academy and numerous other groups. His manuals and technical writings have been adopted by many of his peers in the legal profession. Mr. Estes is a member of the McMinn County Bar Association (past vice president), the Tennessee Bar Association (member, Board of Governors 1996-1998), the National District Attorneys Association (member, Board of Directors 2002-2006 and co-chair, Victim Services Committee 2002-2004) and the National Lawyers Association. He also is a former member of the International Association of Prosecutors. Mr. Estes earned his B.S., with honors, and J.D. degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
