J. KURT SCHUMACHER JR. opened Schumacher Law, LLC in early 2008 to help his clients focus on wealth creation, wealth preservation and wealth transfer. After graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he remained in Boston for several years as an estate planning and estate settlement attorney with Ropes & Gray's Private Client Group. Upon moving to Greenville, South Carolina in 2005, Mr. Schumacher joined Leatherwood Walker Todd & Mann, P.C., where he continued to expand his estate planning knowledge while also advising start-up and small business owners. He was voted by his peers for inclusion in the 2008-2010 Best Lawyers in America for trusts and estates. Mr. Schumacher enjoys helping individual clients grow and preserve the wealth available to them and their families through carefully considered estate planning and asset protection strategies. This requires attention not only to the minimization of gift, estate, income and generation-skipping transfer taxes, but also to his clients' desires, with respect to the care and upbringing of their spouses, children and grandchildren. Mr. Schumacher's practice increasingly includes the preparation of customized premarital agreements for clients who recognize the significant damage that divorce can cause to one's net worth. Given the prevalence of vibrant small businesses in Greenville, he now regularly advises clients who own a business. Prior to attending law school, he worked as a strategy consultant for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), and he has found that this experience had provided him with insight regarding challenges that businesses face, broader than he would have obtained solely through the practice of law.
