BRIAN D. BALONICK is an attorney in the Pittsburgh office of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC. Mr. Balonick concentrates his practice in representing management in many aspects of labor and employment law including union organizing campaigns, strikes, unfair labor practice charges and labor arbitrations. He also represents employers in employment discrimination litigation arising under Title VII and state civil rights laws. Mr. Balonick regularly advises clients in preventive strategies to ensure compliance with labor, employment and wage and hour laws. In this capacity, he counsels clients to ensure that they maintain an issue-free workplace. He also has experience in conducting on-site training seminars for clients on issues such as effective employee relations, equal employment opportunity and other workplace legal issues. Mr. Balonick was honored by his peers and selected to the Pennsylvania Rising Stars list in 2007, 2008 and 2010. He is a member of the Allegheny County and American bar associations. He earned his B.S. degree from The Pennsylvania State University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Duquesne University School of Law. CRAIG M. BROOKS is a director and shareholder of Houston Harbaugh, P.C., a law firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A very important and steady part of Mr. Brooks' practice is preventive work with clients, principally involving daily advice and counsel on handling employment problems and issues as they arise. He concentrates his practice in the labor and employment law area (representing primarily management) including regularly handling employment discrimination claims (which includes sexual harassment cases, age, disability, sex, race and national origin discrimination cases) in court and before government agencies, union relations matters (which includes labor arbitrations, unfair labor practice charges, union contract negotiations, union organizing matters, wrongful discharge claims) and wage and hour matters in court and with the U.S. Department of Labor and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry. He graduated (cum laude) from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and earned his J.D. degree at Duke University School of Law. SHERI L. GIGER is an attorney in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office of Jackson Lewis LLP. Ms. Giger practices in the area of employment, with a focus on preventative human resource policy development, counseling and advice. She also works with compliance issues under the American with Disabilities Act, as amended, and the Family and Medical Leave Act, including the recently issued updated regulations. Ms. Giger counsels and conducts extensive training on topics such as anti-harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, wage and hour, policy/handbook development, hiring and interviewing, background checks, and preventative workplace practices. She also defends charges of discrimination before federal and state agencies, and handles litigation matters. Prior to entering the field of law, Ms. Giger worked for seven years for a Fortune 500 company in human resources at a 20,000+ employee site in South Carolina. She is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. Ms. Giger earned her B.A. degree from Carlow College and her J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She also received an M.S. degree in Human Resources Management from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. PHYLLIS G. HARTMAN is a specialist in strategic HR, employee relations, staffing, and employee/career development. She is president of PGHR Consulting, Inc., and has 25 years experience as an HR management professional in for-profit manufacturing and not-for-profit service sectors. Ms. Hartman has served as an adjunct professor at La Roche College and Slippery Rock University on human resources and business topics. She has also lectured at workshops and webcasts for the Society for Human Resource Management, Pittsburgh Human Resources Association, Westmoreland Human Resources Association, Bayer Center for Non-Profit Management, National Business Institute and other organizations. Ms. Hartman is a past-president of the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association. She earned her B.S. degree from Edinboro State University and her M.S. degree in from La Roche College. Ms. Hartman has been certified as a senior professional in human resources by the Society for Human Resource Management since 1990. She has authored white papers, articles and a recent book on HR careers that was published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Never Get Lost Again: Navigating Your HR Career.
