BRIAN C. HICKMAN joined the Portland office of Gordon & Polscer, LLC in 2008. He graduated No. 1 in his class from Thomas Jefferson School of Law and has been actively litigating ever since. Mr. Hickman began his legal career at Peterkin & Associates, a construction and property law litigation firm located in Bend, Oregon. Mr. Hickman's current practice focuses on representing insurance carriers in both first- and third- party insurance coverage disputes in mediations and in state and federal trial and appellate courts. He also spends significant time advising insurance carriers on how to avoid the prospect of "bad-faith" claims in the first place. Recent litigation successes include an award of summary judgment on a 1+ million dollar construction defect liability claim where the plaintiff alleged a bad-faith withdrawal of defense, an award of summary judgment on a 18+ million dollar fraud claim, and an FRCP 12(b)(6) dismissal of a "bad-faith" claim. Mr. Hickman's background is in psychology, having obtained a Bachelor's degree from Rice University and having worked more than three years as a counselor for troubled youth prior to pursuing a legal career. He is a past member of the Oregon Trial Lawyer's Association and a current member of the Oregon Association of Defense Counsel. He has been admitted to practice before the Oregon state courts and federal district courts, as well as, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Hickman also occasionally represents clients in the Washington state and federal courts. EMILY S. MILLER is an attorney with Parsons Farnell & Grein, LLP in Portland, Oregon. Her practice in insurance coverage disputes focuses on recovery for policyholders and claimants, including commercial general liability coverage, professional liability coverage, directors and officers coverage, health and disability benefits, commercial crime coverage, and property coverage. Ms. Miller received her B.A. degree from the University of Oregon and her J.D. degree, cum laude, from Boston University School of Law. She is a member of the Multnomah Bar Association and the Oregon State Bar Association. R. SCOTT TAYLOR is a sole practitioner in Eugene, where he practices principally in first party claims representing insured's parties only. He received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Oregon at Eugene. Mr. Taylor is a member of the Oregon State Bar Association and the Multnomah County Bar Association. He was previously licensed and practiced in Maryland.
