After graduation, he served a one year clerkship to Presiding Justice Vernon Broom and Associate Justice Michael Sullivan of the Mississippi Supreme Court. Before joining Skyhawke Technologies, LLC, he was a partner at Latham & Burwell, PLLC, and manager of litigation at ChemFirst Inc., a former publicly traded chemical manufacturer headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, and now a subsidiary of DuPont. At ChemFirst, Mr. Spell managed and directed the company's litigation throughout the United States and abroad. He also was the company's primary attorney for its merger and acquisition program. Mr. Spell practices in the areas of business litigation; mergers, acquisitions and commercial transactions; corporate law; employment law; and insurance law. He is a member of The Mississippi Bar, and is admitted to practice before all Mississippi State Courts, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Mississippi, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.
