KARA THOMPSON BURGESS, special needs attorney, is a sole practitioner and the owner of Northland Elder Law. Her practice emphasis is special needs law and guardianships – including preparing special needs trust for individuals with a disability who may receive lawsuit proceeds, inheritances or other funds; and preparing wills and special needs trusts for families of individuals with a disability, all with a focus on asset protection and preserving public benefits eligibility. Ms. Burgess is the first member of Western Missouri in the Academy of Special Needs Planners, a professional organization for attorneys who practice in the area of special needs planning, including preparation of special needs trusts. She has served in the past as a voluntary attorney for Legal Aid of Kansas City and Western Missouri and currently serves as a volunteer attorney for Kansas City Hospice, primarily serving individuals in the Kansas City Missouri area. In addition, Ms. Burgess volunteers for Healthy Families, a counseling and support service located in the Northland area of Kansas City. She serves on the Board of Directors for Traility, Inc., a not-for-profit agency that provides day habilitation services for Clay and Platte County, Missouri residents with mental and physical disabilities, and therapies, education and child care for children with developmental disabilities. Ms. Burgess has received hundreds of court appointments in Western Missouri to serve in the capacity as Guardian ad Litem for children, as well as to represent individuals with a disability in guardianship proceedings. She earned her B.S. degree from Northwest Missouri State University, her master's degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and her J.D. degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. PETER E. GOSS is a founding member of Wendt Goss, P.C. and has been practicing in the areas of personal injury and mass tort litigation for several years. He has represented and obtained favorable results for numerous victims of automobile collisions, slip and fall accidents, severe burn injuries, railroad accidents, and numerous others. Mr. Goss is a member in good standing of the Kansas, Missouri and New Jersey state courts. He also is a member of the United States District Courts for the districts of Kansas and New Jersey. Mr. Goss is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the American Association for Justice, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. He currently serves as a director of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (Young Lawyer Section) and is the KCMBA Young Lawyer Section treasurer. Mr. Goss earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and attended Washburn School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. WILLIAM E. HANS is a co-founder and principal of the Legacy Settlements Group. He is an attorney, licensed to practice law in both Missouri and Kansas, and also is a licensed life insurance agent. Mr. Hans has extensive experience settling all types of personal injury claims as a structured settlement expert, trial attorney and large loss claims specialist for a major reinsurer. He began his legal career as a trial attorney with the Kansas City, Missouri, law firm of Polsinelli, Shalton and Welte. During his tenure with the Polsinelli law firm, he handled all types of litigated claims, including personal injury losses. Mr. Hans also served as an assistant vice president and claims counsel for Employers Reinsurance Corporation, one of the world's largest reinsurers. In this capacity, he resolved the company's catastrophic casualty personal injury losses, often using structured settlements. As a principal in the Legacy Settlements Group, Mr. Hans currently provides full spectrum of "start to finish" service to structure personal injury settlements. This service includes developing an assessment of a claimant's financial needs, tailoring a settlement package to address those needs, assisting in the settlement negotiation and working with the parties to properly document the settlement and deliver the financial proceeds of the settlement. He is a past president of the Kansas City Claims Association. Mr. Hans also is a member of the National Structured Settlements Trade Association. He is a frequent speaker on topics relating to insurance claims and structured settlements. Mr. Hans earned his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of California, Berkeley and his J.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of Law, where he served as an editor of the Law Review. WILLIAM L. HUBBARD is a partner in the Kansas City law firm of Hubbard & Kurtz, L.L.P., where he practices in the areas of estate planning, probate, elder, and special needs law. He has been certified as an elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation and has lectured on estate planning, elder law, corporate and probate law. Mr. Hubbard is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (Probate & Estate Planning, Tax committees), The Missouri Bar (Probate, Elder Law and Tax committees), the American Bar Association and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. He is a founding member of the Missouri chapter of the Council of Advanced Practitioners (past president, outstanding elder law attorney). Mr. Hubbard earned his B.S. degree from Northwestern University and his J.D. degree from the University of Missouri, where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review. SARAH S. RUANE is an attorney in the law firm of Wagstaff & Cartmell LLP, where she focuses her practice in the area of civil trial work with an emphasis on medical malpractice, personal injury, products liability and business litigation. She earned her B.A. degree from Wake Forest University and her J.D. degree from the University of Kansas. Ms. Ruane is licensed to practice in the federal and state courts of Kansas and Missouri. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association and the Lawyer's Association of Kansas City. Ms. Ruane is active in the community and currently volunteers for the Saint Luke's Hospital Foundation and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
