HON. JEANNE STEMPIEN is the Presiding Judge of the Civil Division of the Third Circuit Court, in Wayne County. Judge Stempien is serving her third term as a judge of the Wayne County Third Circuit Court. She is a current member and past chairperson of the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission. Judge Stempien earned her B.A. degree, with honors, at the University of Michigan- Dearborn and her J.D. degree, magna cum laude, at Detroit College of Law. Judge Stempien has previously served as a facilitator for the National Judicial College and is currently a member of the Inns of Court. HON. GERSHWIN A. DRAIN is a judge on the Michigan Third Circuit Court. Judge Drain was appointed to the Third Circuit Court by Governor James J. Blanchard in 1977. Prior to service on the circuit court, Judge Drain served as 36th District Court Judge and as a trial attorney with the Federal Defender's Office. Judge Drain earned his B.A. degree at Western Michigan University and his J.D. degree at the University of Michigan School of Law. HON. AMY P. HATHAWAY has been on the bench since 1995; in the Family Division since 2003; in the Criminal Division prior to that for 16 months; and in the Civil Division before that. Before joining the bench, Judge Hathaway worked at Dykema Gossett and Honigman Miller in the practice areas of corporations and securities. Judge Hathaway recently has been appointed by Governor Granholm to the Governor's Task Force for Children's Justice. She currently is a member of the International Institute of Immigrants. Judge Hathaway is an active member of the Michigan Judges' Association, the American Bar Association, the State bar of Michigan and the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association. She has participated in several ADR lectures. HON. KATHLEEN MACDONALD is a judge on the Michigan Third Circuit Court. She serves on the Civil Division and as Chief Judge Pro Tem. Judge Macdonald joined the Third Circuit in 1986, originally elected to the bench. She was the presiding judge of the Family Division from 2003 to 2005. Judge Macdonald is a graduate of Wayne State University, and she earned her J.D. degree from the University of Detroit Law School. HON. JOHN A. MURPHY is a judge on the Michigan Third Circuit Court. Judge Murphy was re-elected on November 2, 2010 to a 6 year term. HON. BRIAN R. SULLIVAN is a judge on the Third Circuit Court, which is in Wayne County, Michigan. Before taking the bench in 1999, Judge Sullivan practiced civil and criminal trials and appeals, with an emphasis on sports and law. He earned his Bachelor of Philosophy degree, with distinction, at Monteith College, Wayne State University, his Masters of Arts degree in philosophy at Holy Apostles College and Seminary and his J.D. degree, cum laude, at Detroit College of Law. Judge Sullivan was a teaching fellow at Detroit College of Law for 10 years and is an adjunct professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. MODERATOR - FRANCIS R. ORTIZ is a partner and a Practice Department manager for the appellate, labor and employment, insurance and regulatory and school law practice areas of the Detroit office of Dickinson Wright PLLC. Since 1980, Mr. Ortiz has focused his practice in the areas of civil and appellate litigation. His is "AV" rated by Martindale Hubble and was selected for inclusion in the 2010 Michigan Super Lawyers. He is a former adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School. He earned his B.A. degree, with high distinction, at the University of Michigan and his J.D. degree, cum laude, at Harvard University School of Law. Mr. Ortiz is a member and director of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Hispanic Bar Association and is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and its United States Courts Committee.
