JONATHAN D. ACKERMAN is an attorney with the Law Office of Jonathan Ackerman, LLC. He represents donors and tax-exempt organizations on a national basis. Mr. Ackerman's advice is often sought by charitable and other tax-exempt organizations in their creation and operation, especially with respect to contributions and other funding opportunities for charities, as well as by families who desire to integrate philanthropy into their financial and estate planning. He also represents these clients regarding legislative and regulatory tax matters at all levels of government. For the past 25 years, Mr. Ackerman has developed considerable experience in the areas of charitable gift planning, tax-exempt organizations, charitable solicitations laws, federal corporate and partnership taxation, estate planning and probate, IRS practice and procedure, real estate and business formations and transactions. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of charitable gift planning and tax-exempt organizations and has published articles in The Journal of Gift Planning, the Planned Giving Design Center, Planned Giving Today, Charitable Gift Planning News, the American Bankers Association Journal, the Southeast Regional Wealth Management Magazine, and the Maryland State Bar Journal. Mr. Ackerman serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning and acts as it's government relations advisor. He also is a past president and director of the Chesapeake Planned Giving Council, and served on the Ad Hoc Committee on Ethics and Accountability in the Nonprofit Sector for the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations. Mr. Ackerman has worked extensively on a pro bono basis with various charities and has served as a volunteer with several local non-profit organizations. He is a member of the American Bar Association and Maryland State Bar Association (Taxation and Real Property, Probate and Trust sections); and he attended the University of Maryland and the University of Baltimore School of Law, and then obtained his Master of Laws in Taxation at Georgetown University Law Center. STEVEN M. GEVARTER is a partner at Gordon Feinblatt Rothman Hoffberger & Hollander, LLC, and is a member of the tax planning and business law practice groups. He had more than 30 years of tax practice experience and provides counsel on a wide range of federal and state tax planning and compliance matters for individuals, tax-exempt organizations and business entities, including corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and trusts. Mr. Gevarter also has extensive experience in business related matters, such as acquisitions and joint ventures, choice of entity formation and corporate governance. He earned his J.D. degree from Villanova Law School, cum laude, his LL.M. degree (Tax) from the New York University School of Law and his B.A. degree from Franklin & Marshall College. Following law school, Mr. Gevarter clerked for the Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. He is admitted to the bars of the states of Maryland and Delaware, and currently serves on the Tax Section Council of the Maryland State Bar Association. Mr. Gevarter is a member of the American Bar Association (Section of Taxation, Partnerships and Real Estate committees) and the Maryland State Bar Association (Section of Taxation). He is also a past chair of the Maryland Advanced Tax Institute. CHARLES B. JONES is a shareholder in the Baltimore law firm of Thomas & Libowitz, P.A., where he heads the estates and trusts department. Mr. Jones has an active practice in taxation, wealth preservation, estate planning and business succession planning, including the use of charitable planned giving tools. He has an extensive background in the creative use of Section 509(a)(3) supporting organizations and bailouts of Type III supporting organizations since the 2007 tax act., charitable and non-charitable trusts and exempt organizations, family limited partnerships and family limited liability companies. His practice areas also include mergers and acquisitions and integration into the client's estate plan. His clientele include closely held businesses, publicly traded businesses, non-profit organizations, private foundations, individuals and estates. Mr. Jones speaks frequently on the above topics to both professional and non-professional audiences. He is a member of the Maryland Bar, the U.S. District and Tax Courts and is a director of The Baltimore Estate Planning Council. He earned his undergraduate degree from Towson University, his M.A.S. degree from The Johns Hopkins University, his J.D. degree from the University of Baltimore, School of Law and a Master of Laws degree in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center.
