STEVEN M. GEVARTER is an attorney at Gordon Feinblatt Rothman Hoffberger & Hollander, LLC. He is a member in the tax planning and business law practice groups. His more than 30 years of practice includes providing counsel on a wide range of federal and state tax planning and compliance matters for individuals, tax-exempt organizations and business entities, including corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies. Mr. Gevarter also has extensive experience in business related matters, such as acquisitions and joint ventures, and issues involving choice of entity formation, the purchase and sale of a business and corporate governance. He earned his J.D. degree from Villanova Law School, his LL.M. degree from the New York University School of Law and his B.A. degree from Franklin & Marshall College. He is admitted to the bars of the states of Maryland and Delaware. Mr. Gevarter is a member of the American Bar Association (Section of Taxation, Partnerships and Real Estate committees), the Maryland State Bar Association (Section of Taxation, Tax Section Council), and the Maryland Advanced Tax Institute (Real Estate and Partnership Day, past chair). GARY M. HYMAN is a principal with the law firm Ober | Kaler, where he has actively expanded the firm's business and tax group's scope of practice. Mr. Hyman has more than 30 years of experience handling tax, estate, health and business matters. He represents entrepreneurial and institutional business organizations and individuals in all aspects of state, federal and multi-state tax matters including all aspects of Internal Revenue Service and state tax controversy and compliance, estates and trusts, and business matters. Mr. Hyman's state and multi-state knowledge is unique and extensive. Having been in charge of the revision of the Maryland tax law, he is intimately familiar with the intricacies and opportunities presented by state and local tax matters on both the legal and legislative fronts. Mr. Hyman's experience as founder and chair of the Maryland State Bar Association State Tax Study Group, as a member of the Taxation Committee of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and as a frequent author and lecturer on tax matters has enabled him to obtain significant beneficial results for his clients. He earned his J.D. degree from the University of Maryland School of Law, and his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Bandeis University. Mr. Hyman is admitted to practice before the Court of Appeals of Maryland. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Maryland Bar Foundation, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce (Taxation Committee 1997 to present), the Maryland State Bar Association (Tax Section, State Tax Study Group, past and current author of materials in MICPEL's Maryland Taxes Advanced Tax Institute Committee, co-chair State and Local Tax Issues Day 2004 to 2007), and the Maryland Tax Court Rules Committee (1988 to present). JEFFREY A. MARKOWITZ is a principal in the Baltimore law office of Miles & Stockbridge P.C., where he engages in a wide range of sophisticated tax areas including corporate tax, partnership tax and international tax. He has represented companies ranging from multi-national corporations engaged in mergers and acquisitions, to start-up entrepreneurial clients. Mr. Markowitz has provided tax and business structuring advice on strategic joint ventures, creative employee equity compensation and creative cross border tax planning. His practice also includes sophisticated tax structurings to minimize state and local taxes including sales taxes, state income taxes, and recordation and transfer taxes. Mr. Markowitz is a frequent lecturer in the area of choice of business entity including the use of limited liability companies. He has served on two ad hoc committees of the Maryland State Bar dealing with revisions to the Maryland General Partnership Act and the Maryland Limited Partnership Act. Mr. Markowitz assists members of the corporate practice group in the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions. He is an adjunct professor of law at the University of Baltimore School of Law where he has taught business planning, corporate tax and advanced real estate tax at both the law school and graduate tax program. Mr. Markowitz is a member of the American Bar Association (Tax Section, Corporate Tax Committee) and the Maryland State Bar Association where he was elected chair of the Tax Section for 2003, and has served on the Tax Section Council since 2000. In addition, he is a long-standing participant in the Maryland Advanced Tax Institute, which he chaired in 2000. Mr. Markowitz earned his B.S. degree, summa cum laude, from Villanova University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Villanova University School of Law.
