TAMAL A. BANTON is a former senior counsel with the law firm of Funk & Bolton, P.A., where he was a member of the Local Government Practice Group for approximately eight years. His primary focus at Funk and Bolton, P.A., was civil litigation, local government and municipal law, and general business litigation. Mr. Banton also provided legal representation to corporations. Mr. Banton has experience in trials (both bench and jury), administrative hearings, and mediations in both federal and Maryland state court. Prior to working with Funk & Bolton's Local Government Practice Group, he worked as a staff attorney for the Prisoner Rights Information System of Maryland, Inc. Mr. Banton is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. He is a member of the Prince George's County Bar Association as well as the J. Franklin Bourne Bar Association. Mr. Banton earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from Hampton University and his J.D. degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. JAN I. BERLAGE is a partner with the law firm Gohn, Hankey & Stichel, LLP, where his practice focuses on general business litigation, ranging from commercial disputes to bankruptcy and civil rights litigation. He has experience in trials, arbitrations, mediations and administrative hearings in both federal and state court, including arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. Prior to private practice, Mr. Berlage served as law clerk to the Hon. E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. He has taught pretrial litigation practice at the University of Maryland, School of Law, and served on the Board of Governors for the Maryland State Bar Association. Mr. Berlage is a member of the Connecticut, New York, Maryland and District of Columbia bars, as well as numerous federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He has chaired numerous committees for the ABA Young Lawyers Division, including its Ethics and Professionalism, Bankruptcy, and Individual Rights and Responsibilities committees. Mr. Berlage earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from the Wesleyan University and his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. ALEXANDER CHIZHIK is a member of the Baltimore law firm of Blades & Rosenfeld, P.A., where his practice focuses on civil business litigation involving all aspects of contracts, tort liabilities and employment issues. He also is active in white collar defense matters. Mr. Chizhik earned his B.A. degree from the University of Maryland and his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He is a member of the American, Maryland State, Baltimore City and Howard County bar associations. WILLIAM A. McCOMAS is a partner at the Maryland law firm of Shapiro Sher Guinot & Sandler and a member of the firm's business-law department. Recently named a Best Lawyers® 2012 "Lawyer of the Year," Mr. McComas concentrates on assisting entrepreneurs and companies of all sizes in creating, protecting, acquiring, developing and commercializing technology. He represents companies on complex business transactions, including strategic alliances, financing, venture-capital investments, management and disposition of intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Mr. McComas earned his B.A. degree from Brown University and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Baltimore School of Law. He is a speaker and panelist at many forums for business and industry professionals and has written extensively on legal-related technology issues that impact businesses today. KARL W. MEANS is a shareholder in the firm of Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, P.A., and leads the Intellectual Property Practice Group. His practice concentrates on technology transactions involving technology transfers and licensing, software licensing, and the commercialization of products and services. As part of that practice, Mr. Means regularly advises clients on licenses of all kinds, open source software, internet and e-commerce issues, and domestic and international manufacturing and distribution deals. Mr. Means frequently acts as an advisory to start-up and emerging businesses on issues ranging from business formation and general corporate matters, to unfair competition, confidentiality, and web site best practices. Additionally, he advises professional sports leagues on matters concerning sports gambling, copyright royalty distribution, and national legislative and regulatory issues. He is a regular speaker on intellectual property and entertainment law issues, including the convergence of licensing, media content and technology. Mr. Means earned his B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University; his M.B.A. degree from Price College of Business, University of Oklahoma; and his J.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Oklahoma. Mr. Means is chair of the District of Columbia Bar Section on Arts, Entertainment, Media and Sports Law.
