JAN I. BERLAGE is a partner with the law firm Gohn, Hankey & Stichel, LLP, where his practice focuses on general business litigation, ranging from commercial disputes to bankruptcy and civil rights litigation. He has experience in trials, arbitrations, mediations and administrative hearings in both federal and state court, including arguments before the Maryland Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. Prior to private practice, Mr. Berlage served as law clerk to the Hon. E. Stephen Derby, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. He has taught pretrial litigation practice at the University of Maryland, School of Law and served on the Board of Governors for the Maryland State Bar Association. Mr. Berlage is a member of the Connecticut, New York, Maryland, and District of Columbia bars, as well as numerous federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He has chaired numerous committees for the ABA Young Lawyers Division, including its Ethics and Professionalism, Bankruptcy, and Individual Rights and Responsibilities committees. Mr. Berlage earned his B.A. degree, with honors, from the Wesleyan University and his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. G. DAVID DEAN is a member of the firm's Bankruptcy & Corporate Restructuring Department in the Baltimore office of Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A. He focuses his practice on corporate reorganizations, out-of-court restructurings, and complex business litigation in bankruptcy. Mr. Dean has spoken on various aspects of bankruptcy and published articles on a variety of bankruptcy topics. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland and the Baltimore City Bar Association. Mr. Dean earned his B.A. degree at the University of Maryland and his J.D. degree at the University of Baltimore School of Law. C. KEVIN KOBBE is a partner in the financial restructuring and bankruptcy practice group of the law firm of DLA Piper US LLP, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of bankruptcy and commercial litigation. Mr. Kobbe regularly represents secured and unsecured creditors, lessors, asset purchasers, debtors, trustees and committees in bankruptcy cases throughout the country. He has experience in handling a wide variety of debtor-creditor disputes (including all types of bankruptcy litigation, lender liability litigation, loan workouts and receiverships), Uniform Commercial Code disputes (including breach of warranty litigation, lien validity/priority litigation and matters relating to the exercise of remedies by secured creditors) and real estate disputes (including complex landlord-tenant litigation and title insurance litigation). Mr. Kobbe has acted as lead counsel in more than 200 trials (including numerous jury trials) and evidentiary hearings in various jurisdictions, including Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia. In 1996, he was lead defense counsel in the first jury trial in the history of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. Mr. Kobbe earned his J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He frequently lectures on commercial litigation, bankruptcy and creditors' rights issues to attorneys, accountants, lenders, financial professionals and trade associations.
