CHARLES T. ENGEL is a partner in the Topeka law firm of Engel Law, P.A. and practices in the areas of bankruptcy reorganizations, divorce, real estate, commercial law, civil litigation, lobbying and non-profits. He earned his law degree, with honors, from Washburn University. Mr. Engel wrote "Personal Liability of Nonprofit Directors," 60 JBAK 1991, and has written the Commercial and Banking Chapter in the Kansas Bar Association's Annual Survey of Law from 1991 to 2006. He also has written the Banking, Commercial and Contract Section of the Kansas Bar Associations' Annual Survey, 1990 and the Non-Profit Chapter in the Kansas Corporation Handbook. Mr. Engel has conducted seminars focusing on nonprofit organizations and bankruptcy issues. He is a member of the Topeka and Kansas bar associations. KYLE J. MEAD has been the chief examining attorney for Lawyers Title of Topeka, Inc. since 2002. His previous practice experience included real estate, family law, probates and estates, banking law, collections, and civil litigation. Mr. Mead has written and presented on landlord-tenant law in Kansas and title insurance, and has given title presentations to lawyers, paralegals, and real estate agents. He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Washburn School of Law. Mr. Mead is a member of the Kansas and Topeka bar associations. JAMES F. THOMPSON is a partner of the Kansas City, Missouri, law firm of Lathrop & Gage LLP, where he represents individuals and corporate clients in federal and state environmental litigation, compliance and real property matters. He has been actively involved in various aspects of environmental insurance coverage analysis and litigation on behalf of policyholders. Mr. Thompson is a frequent lecturer on environmental and real property issues. He has participated in environmental audits and has defended clients in various civil and criminal enforcement matters. Mr. Thompson earned his B.S. degree from the University of Kansas and his J.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as an articles editor for the Kansas Law Review. Mr. Thompson is a member of the American (member, Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law Section) and Kansas City Metropolitan (member, Environmental Law Committee) bar associations. He also serves on the steering committee of the Kansas City Brownfields Initiative. He was an instructor of a course on the regulatory framework of environmental law at the University of California at Los Angeles.
