AREND J. ABEL is the chair of the appellate law practice group with Cohen & Malad, LLP, and represents clients at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal courts. Mr. Abel's practice areas are government litigation, appeals, business litigation, class action, intellectual property litigation, securities litigation, health care and health care reimbursement, and gaming. He has taught many lectures and seminars, including "Presenting Effective Appellate Oral Argument," Office of the Attorney General and the Appellate Practice Section of the Indiana State Bar Association, "The Changing Face of Regulatory Takings," Conference of Government Mining Attorneys, "Brief Writing," Indiana Office of the Attorney General and "Analysis of Indiana Department of Environmental Management v. Chemical Waste Management, Inc.," Indianapolis Bar Association. Mr. Abel is a member of the American, Federal, Indiana State and Indianapolis bar associations. He earned his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Ball State University and his J.D. degree, summa cum laude, from Indiana University at Bloomington School of Law. CHARLES E. BRUESS graduated, cum laude, from both the University of Minnesota and the Indiana University School of Law, where he was a member of the Indiana Law Journal and also was a note editor. After graduation from law school, Mr. Bruess was selected for membership in the Order of the Coif. Following the completion of Officer Candidate School, he served as a legal officer with the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Bruess was a trial lawyer with Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis, Indiana. From 1999-2009, he served as the courtroom deputy for the Hon. David F. Hamilton of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. During 2009, Mr. Bruess served as a Special Master in the matter of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission vs. Alanar, Inc., et al. pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana as Cause No. 1:05-1102-DFH-TAB. RICHARD L. DARST is a partner at the law firm of Cohen Garelick & Glazier, where he concentrates his practice on federal litigation, employment law, and general litigation. Mr. Darst has held the positions of president of the 7th Circuit Bar Association, distinguished fellow of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation, president of the Indiana Affiliate of the National Employment Lawyers Association, president of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis Northeast, Interim U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, First Assistant U.S. Attorney, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Deputy Corporation Counsel for the city of Indianapolis, trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., member of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Committee on Procedures for the Appointment of Counsel in Civil Cases, member of the Southern District of Indiana Committee for Recommendations for U.S. Magistrate Judge, the Southern District of Indiana (local rules committee), and chairman of the ICLEF Federal Practice Seminar. He earned his B.A. degree from Indiana University and his J.D. degree from Indiana University at Bloomington School of Law. BRIAN J. PAUL is a partner in the law firm of Ice Miller LLP, where his practice focuses on appellate work, ERISA and employee benefits litigation, insurance coverage litigation, and complex tort and commercial litigation matters in the federal courts. He has previously written and presented on topics in his main areas of expertise. Mr. Paul is a member of the Federalist Society, Indiana State, Indianapolis and 7th Circuit bar associations. He also is a member of the Supreme Court Historical Society. Mr. Paul earned his B.A. degree, with highest distinction, his M.A. degree from Purdue University and his J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University Law School. SCOTT A. WEATHERS is an attorney in private practice with The Weathers Law Office, P.C., in Indianapolis, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of reinsurance arbitration, as well as life, health, and long term care insurance litigation. Mr. Weathers earned his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Gonzaga University, and his J.D. degree from Washington College of Law of American University. He is a past chair of the executive committee of the Litigation Section of the Indianapolis Bar Association and a member of the American Bar Association. Mr. Weathers also serves as president of First Jury, Inc., a trial consulting firm he started in 1998.
