HON. WILLIAM D. MADDUX is the presiding judge of the Law Division for the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago. Since 1991, Judge Maddux has served the court in various capacities including supervising judge of Abuse and Neglect, Juvenile Division; and presiding judge of the Law Division. In 2007, he became an adjunct professor of law at the Kent College of Law in Chicago. He earned his B.A. degree at the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. degree at Georgetown Law Center. HON. ELIZABETH M. BUDZINSKI is a civil trial judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County in Law Division's Motions Section. Judge Budzinski was elected to the bench in 1992 and appointed to the Law Division. She began her private law practice in 1989 practicing in the areas of labor and employment, professional liability and medical malpractice. Judge Budzinski earned her B.A. degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her J.D. degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. HON. DENNIS J. BURKE is a civil trial judge in the Law Division's Jury Section of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Prior to the bench, Judge Burke began his private law practice in 1975 in the areas of personal injury law, commercial law and commercial litigation. He earned his B.A. degree at St. Mary's University of Minnesota and his J.D. degree at John Marshall Law School - Chicago. HON. DEBORAH M. DOOLING is a civil trial judge in the Law Division's Jury Section of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Prior to the bench, Judge Dooling served as an assistant states attorney in Cook County. Judge Dooling earned her B.A. degree at the University of Illinois and her J.D. degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. HON. JENNIFER DUNCAN-BRICE is a civil trial judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago, Illinois. Judge Duncan-Brice was elected to the bench in 1992 and appointed to the Law Division. She now has a calendar call in the division, hearing cases from filing to disposition. Judge Duncan-Brice earned her B.A. degree at Denison University and her J.D. degree at John Marshall Law School. HON. RICHARD J. ELROD is a civil trial judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County in the Law Division's Jury Section. Judge Elrod was elected to the bench in 1988 and appointed to the Law Division. Prior to his election to the bench, Judge Elrod was senior assistant attorney general (1986-1988) and served as sheriff of Cook County from 1970-1986. Judge Elrod earned his B.A. degree at Northwestern University and his J.D. degree at Northwestern University School of Law. HON. WILLIAM J. HADDAD is a civil trial judge in the Law Division's Jury Section of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He has lectured and written articles on trial practice for the ISBA Journal and other legal publications, and he serves as an adjunct professor in trial advocacy at The John Marshall School of Law. Before he assumed the bench in 2003, he was a litigator for over 30 years, serving as a felony prosecutor in Chicago until 1981, and a partner in the loop law firm of Haddad, Schlack & Associates He served as President of United States Mutual Association, Inc until its acquisition in 2000, and was a founding director of the United Trust Bank. Before taking the bench, Haddad was the founding president of the Arab-American Bar Association of Illinois (1990), president of the West Suburban Bar Association (1997) and the founding president of the Suburban Bar Coalition of Cook County (1998). HON. THOMAS L. HOGAN is a civil trial judge in the Law Division's Jury Section of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He has served in the Jury Section since 2002. Judge Hogan has spoken at numerous seminars on various trial practice issues. He earned his A.B. degree at the University of Notre Dame and his J.D. degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. HON. JOAN E. POWELL is a civil trial judge in the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Prior to the bench, Judge Powell began her private law practice in 1992 focusing on contract, family and elder law. She then became a law clerk with the Circuit Court of Cook County and spent four years as a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph N. Casciato. In 2000, Judge Powell became an assistant Cook County state’s attorney doing medical malpractice defense, employment and labor law and civil rights litigation. She earned her B.A. degree at the University of Maryland and her J.D. degree at John Marshall Law School - Chicago. HON. SUSAN RUSCITTI GRUSSEL sits as a trial judge in the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. Judge Grussel was elected in 1992 and is presently assigned to the Law Division at the Richard J. Daley Center and presides over jury trials. Previously, she was assigned to the Municipal District 2 and heard both civil and criminal cases including bench and jury trials. In 1998, Judge Grussel was appointed as a judicial mentor and during the past 12 years, has mentored several judges. Judge Grussel has participated during her legal career as both a speaker and panelist. She is also a certified mediator for the Cook County Court system. Judge Grussel has served as a volunteer at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She earned her B.A. degree at Western Illinois University and her J.D. degree at John Marshall Law School - Chicago. MODERATOR - JAMES M. HOFERT is a partner in the Chicago law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP. Mr. Hofert is an experienced trial lawyer who has a substantial practice in the areas of complex tort litigation and environmental law, including construction injury, bad faith, product liability, toxic tort and medical malpractice. His cases have involved inorganic acids (sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid) and caustic soda, and defense of environmental law cases involving chlorinated hydrocarbons (chlorinated solvents, wood preservatives) brought under CERCLA proceedings, various state environmental statutes and common law actions. Mr. Hofert has defended and tried a good number of medical malpractice cases with significant favorable results and has defended cases in both federal and state courts, with past and pending jurisdictions including Illinois, California, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Indiana and Louisiana. He has gone to verdict in jury trials in more than 80 lawsuits, many of which have been cases involving bad faith. In addition, Mr. Hofert has written and presented for numerous organizations. He earned his B.A. degree from Grinnell College and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
