KAREN GARRETT is the owner of Desert Palm Legal Nurse Consulting in Marion, Iowa. She is certified by the Vicki Milazzo Institute, a world renowned educator in the field of legal nurse consulting. Ms. Garrett has worked on cases including medical malpractice, personal injury and workers compensation, and has provided services to attorneys and their clients across the country. She has extensive experience in a variety of hospital settings including medical, surgical, orthopedics, cardiac and renal. Ms. Garrett has also worked for insurance companies assisting with government contracts for Medicare and URAC certification. She has worked with preauthorizing surgical procedures and extensive medical record review. Ms. Garrett also assisted in writing the policies and procedures for the medical review department. She completed her BSN degree at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. JENNIFER KEM is the owner of a legal nurse consulting business which was started in 2002. When she started the business she maintained a full time position as a director of nursing in a home care agency. In August of 2005, Ms. Kem partnered with Anne Meyer and changed the company name to Med-Law Connection, Inc. They are a nationwide company serving both plaintiff and defense attorneys. Her professional nursing experience spans over 26 years and covers hospital nursing in OB, orthopedics, medical/surgical units, as well as ICU/CCU and cardiac step down. In addition Ms. Kem worked as an RN in several home care agencies. Home care allowed her the opportunity to work with people of all ages who had a wide range of diagnoses, had undergone surgical procedures, were cancer patients, and who required IV therapy and/or wound care. In addition to being a registered nurse, Ms. Kem has also obtained certifications as a case manager, legal nurse consultant, life care planner and Medicare set aside consultant. ANNE MEYER is co-owner of Med-Law Connection, Inc., a legal nurse consulting firm. Med-Law Connection, Inc. is located in the Mid-west and works with attorneys nationally. She brings over 22 years of professional nursing experience to her work as a consultant and expert witness. Ms. Meyer has worked as a hospital staff and charge nurse in the cardiac and critical care areas, during which time she implemented an inpatient cardiac rehabilitation program. As director of nursing in a national home health infusion company, a great deal of time was focused on regulatory compliance with Medicare, local and state government agencies, as well as educating staff and implementing processes to ensure safe and quality care to the client in their home and long term care facilities. As a clinician for an outpatient rehabilitation company, Ms. Meyer implemented and facilitated a vestibular diagnostic and rehabilitation program. She earned her B.S. degree from Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa. She also has taken additional coursework to further her knowledge of legal nurse consulting including Medical-Legal Consulting Institute, Inc.'s, certified legal nurse consultant program and Medipro Seminars & University of Florida for certification in Medicare set aside arrangement. Ms. Meyer is very proud of the nursing profession and supports numerous nursing organizations. She is a member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants, American Nurses Association, and National Association of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. Ms. Meyer also serves as a board member on the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants Certification Board. Through these multi-dimensional areas of medical experience, she brings to Med-Law Connection, Inc. the ability to assist the attorney to strengthen their medically related cases in a cost effective manner. The attorney is able to focus on their area of expertise, while we focus on ours and work together to provide a stronger position for the client. MARY A. SHOOK is a doctor with Quad City and Clinton Occupational Health. She is board certified in occupational medicine, a certified MRO and a certified independent medical examiner. Dr. Shook has worked exclusively in the specialty of occupational medicine since 1990. She moved to Iowa in 2005 and to Quad City and Clinton Occupational Health in 2009. Dr. Shook previously worked as a consultant for the U.S. Postal Service during the difficult times surrounding Anthrax exposure and at National Institutes of Health where HIV needle-stick exposure protocol was developed. Besides performance of Independent Medical Exams, (IME), she has experience in psychiatric issues related to work and has lectured on violence in the workplace. Dr. Shook is a graduate from the State University of New York at Albany; Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington D.C.; and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland. She is a member of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, Clinton County Medical Society, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the American Medical Association. Dr. Shook has staff memberships with Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa; and Iowa Health System and Trinity Regional Health System - Iowa and Illinois. DR. JACQUELINE M. STOKEN is a doctor in West De Moines, Iowa, with her own medical practice. She has been an adjunct assistant professor of rehabilitation medicine with Des Moines University since 1996. Dr. Stoken is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Rehabilitation Medicine, a diplomat with the American Board of Holistic Medicine and certified by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Osteopathic College of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Osteopathic Association, American Holistic Medical Association, Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association, American Academy of Osteopathy, Iowa Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Polk County Osteopathic Medical Association. Dr. Stoken earned her R.N. degree from Presbyterian University Hospital School of Nursing, her B.S. degree from Chatham College, and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. She also completed the certification program in management for physicians from the University of Saint Thomas, Institute of Physician Leadership. MODERATOR - LANDON R. DuFOE is a partner in the Cedar Rapids law firm of Thinnes& Dufoe Law Offices where he practices in family law, civil trial litigation, labor and employment litigation, ERISA matters, and workers' compensation. Mr. Dufoe is a member of the Linn County, the Iowa State, and the American bar associations. He is admitted to practice in the State of Iowa, and before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit. Mr. Dufoe earned his B.A. degree from Coe College and his J.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Law.
