ALLEN M. ARAKAKI is president of Allen M. Arakaki, CPA, Inc., and has practiced as a Certified Public Accountant since 1972. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants (HSCPA), and served as the Chairman of the HSCPA Nonprofit Organizations Committee for twelve years. Mr. Arakaki's background includes lecturing on various tax and nonprofit topics for the Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations, Hawaii State Bar Association, Kapiolani Community College, and the Weinberg Fellows and Castle Colleagues programs. Additionally, he is a contributing author of "It's the Law: What Nonprofits Need to Know." Mr. Arakaki's firm currently provides accounting, tax, and consulting services to over 200 nonprofit organizations. TREVER K. ASAM is an attorney with the Honolulu law office of Cades Schutte, where his main areas of focus are tax and litigation. He has extensive experience in tax controversy and the litigation of tax disputes in the federal courts. Mr. Asam also works frequently with tax-exempt organizations, addressing questions involving unrelated business income and the use of subsidiary organizations and joint ventures. He earned his B.A. degree from Yale University and his J.D. degree from Duke University School of Law. Mr. Asam is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Hawaii State Bar Association. ROGER H. EPSTEIN is the chair of the tax department of Cades Schutte and has extensive experience in all areas of tax law. His areas of practice include corporate tax law, partnership tax law, real estate tax law, international tax law, tax planning, Hawaii state taxation, and tax controversies. Mr. Epstein has substantial expertise in international tax transactions and international estate planning. Prior to joining Cades Schutte, he was a tax law specialist with the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. and prior to that, he was an Internal Revenue Agent in Washington D.C. Mr. Epstein is a frequent lecturer at tax presentations in Hawaii on the U.S. mainland and internationally. He is A.V. rated by Martindale Hubbell and is listed in both "Who's Who" in American Law and Best Lawyers in America (every edition since the publication began). Mr. Epstein earned his B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and his J.D. degree, with honors, from Georgetown University Law Center. He has written for the Georgetown Law Review and is a member of the Hawaii (Tax Section) and Virginia state bar associations; the District of Columbia Bar Association; the American Bar Association (Tax Subcommittee and International Committee) and the American, Interpacific, and International bar associations. Mr. Epstein is admitted to practice before the Hawaii State Bar, the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii, United States Tax Court, United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. MELISSA TEVES PAVLICEK is the founder of Hawaii Public Policy Advocates, LLC, with Stephen Teves, which assists clients in building grassroots advocacy coalitions, developing legislative and government relations strategy, drafting legislation, analyzing legal and political issues concerning legislative measures, drafting testimony, monitoring legislation, lobbying members of the state legislature and administration, testifying before legislative and other governmental agencies and generally consulting on government relations matters. Ms. Pavlicek is admitted to practice law in Hawaii and the federal courts. Her government affairs experience includes serving as a committee clerk in the Hawaii State House of Representatives (1987), as a legislative aide for the Hawaii State Senate (1992-1993) and as a legal extern at the Honolulu City Council (1995). Ms. Pavlicek earned her B.A. degree from the University of Hawaii and her J.D. degree from William S. Richardson School of Law. She has served as the chair of the Hawaii State Bar Association Business Law Section and the president of the Hawaii Women Lawyers. Ms. Pavlicek is the vice president of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii and the chair of the Aloha Tower Development Corporation.
