CATHERINE M. FUJISAKI is the founding attorney of Manoa Estate Planning LLC. She previously practiced in the trusts and estates department at Cades Schutte LLLP, and clerked in the probate court for the Honorable Colleen K. Hirai. Ms. Fujisaki is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Hawaii Estate Planning Council. She participates in the Estate Planning, Tax, and Real Estate sections of the HSBA and serves on the board of the Elder Law section. She is a co-author of the Hawaii Conservatorship and Guardianship Forms Manual. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Fujisaki worked as a corporate controller, investment manager and real estate broker. She also holds the professional designations of CPA, CFA and R. Ms. Fujisaki has an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.B.A. degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned her J.D. degree, cum laude, from the William S. Richardson School of Law. JAMES A. KAWACHIKA is a partner with the law firm of O'Connor Playdon & Guben, where his practice includes advising lawyers and law firms on legal ethics matters and representing lawyers before the disciplinary board of the Hawaii Supreme Court. He also serves as an expert witness in legal ethics. Mr. Kawachika is a former chair of the disciplinary board and a past president of the Hawaii State Bar Association. He currently is one of Hawaii's delegates to the American Bar Association's House of Delegates and was selected by the American Bar Association's president to serve a three-year term on the American Bar Associations Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility, which analyzes and issues formal opinions interpreting the American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the Model Code of Judicial Conduct. Mr. Kawachika has presented numerous legal ethics seminars for both private CLE providers and the HSBA, as well as individual organizations. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Hawaii and his J.D. degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley. Mr. Kawachika is a member of the Hawaii State and American bar associations, the American Bar Association Center for Professional Responsibility, and the American Judicature Society. He is president of the Hawaii Justice Foundation and a director of the Hawaii Chapter of the American Judicature Society. Mr. Kawachika is "AV"- rated by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory and is listed in Best Lawyers in America by Woodward/White. KENNETH A. MARTYN is an attorney in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he has been practicing in the areas of U.S. and international estate tax for more than 20 years. Mr. Martyn has worked as a sole proprietor in Hawaii since 1985 with a practice that emphasizes estate planning and real estate, including Section 1031 like-kind exchanges. In recent years, he also has practiced in the area of real estate title insurance defense for Chicago Title Insurance, as well as securities arbitrations, in addition to extensive estate planning and estate tax work. Mr. Martyn served as an extern clerk to Justice Stanley Mosk of the California Supreme Court, and later worked as a domestic and international tax attorney for Fenwick & West, a large Silicon Valley law firm. He is licensed in both California and Hawaii. Mr. Martyn received his B.A. degree, with high honors, from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his J.D. degree from UCLA School of Law, where he was ranked 7th out of 335 graduates. MARGARET JANE NAKAMATSU currently practices with Est8Planning Counsel LLLC, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She manages the firm's fiduciary administration cases including probates, guardianships, conservatorships and trust administrations. Ms. Nakamatsu earned her B.A. degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her J.D. degree from the University of Texas School of Law. She is a former member of the Board of Education for the State of Hawaii, is a member of the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Chapter of the Christian Legal Society, and is a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association and its Probate, Real Property and Elder Law sections. JOHN G. ROTH is an attorney with the law firm of Robert W. Hastings II A Law Corporation. Mr. Roth practices exclusively in estate planning. Before joining Robert W. Hastings II A Law Corporation, Mr. Roth was an associate with Case Lombardi & Pettit, where he concentrated on real estate law, estate planning and taxation. He is a frequent speaker on topics relating to estate planning and estate administration. Mr. Roth is the president-elect of the Young Lawyers Division of the HSBA and the president of the Rotary Club of North Hawaii. He earned his B.S. degree, with honors, from the University of Kansas (Phi Beta Kappa) and his J.D./M.B.A. dual degree from the University of Hawaii.
