RUSSELL A. BROWN received a B.S. degree in business finance from Kansas State University in 1981 and a J.D. degree from Washburn University in 1985. Before becoming a trustee, he practiced consumer bankruptcy law for 11 years and was a founder of the Arizona Consumer Bankruptcy Subsection and its first chair. He serves or has served on various state committees including Local Bankruptcy Rules Committees, Chapter 13 Fee Committee, the Consumer Protection Committee of the State Bar, Chapter 13 Model Plan group, Bankruptcy Court Website Committee, and Bankruptcy Court ECF Users Group. He is the national bankruptcy trustee liaison for the Additional Stakeholders Functional Requirements Group as part of the CM/ECF Next Generation Project by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. In 1996, the United States Trustee appointed him as a Chapter 13 Standing Trustee for the District of Arizona. He was on the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees Board for two years and currently serves on the Board of Directors for both the National Data Center and the Trustee Education Network. Also, he serves or has served on various NACTT committees, including the Due Process Committee, Insurance Working Group, Standing Trustee Alliance for Computer Security, Statistical Data Committee, and Website Committee. HON. CHARLES G. CASE II was appointed a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Arizona on January 5, 1994 and reappointed effective January 5, 2008. Prior to that time, he was a member of the Phoenix law firm of Meyer, Hendricks, Victor, Osborn & Maledon, P.A., where he concentrated in bankruptcy, Chapter 11 reorganizations, secured transactions and commercial litigation. He graduated cum laude from Harvard University and magna cum laude from Arizona State University College of Law. Judge Case is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and a member of the American Law Institute, the International Insolvency Institute and the American Bankruptcy Institute. He is a past resident of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. He has spoken on domestic and international commercial and bankruptcy law and has instructed newly appointed judges on case management and related topics. HON. REDFIELD T. BAUM is a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in Phoenix, Arizona. Judge Baum was a partner with the Phoenix Arizona law firms of Rawlins, Ellis, Burris and Kiewit from 1973 to 1980, and then with O'Connor, Cavanagh, Anderson, Westover, Killingsworth and Beshears from 1980 to 1989. His practice was primarily in commercial law, creditors' and debtors' rights bankruptcy/reorganization. He was appointed as the Fifth Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Arizona in March, 1990. HON. SARAH SHARER CURLEY currently serves as a Bankruptcy Judge in Arizona, having been appointed by the 9th United States Circuit Court of Appeals, in 2000, to a second, 14 year term. She is currently an adjunct professor at the Sandra Day O'Connor School of Law, Arizona State University, teaching topics in bankruptcy law. Judge Curley was previously a senior-level counsel for First Wisconsin Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was an associate attorney with Otterbourg, Steindler, Houston & Rosen in New York City, concentrating in the bankruptcy and complex litigation areas. The National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges recently published her article Where to Hide? How Valuation of Derivatives Haunts the Courts–Even After BAPCPA, 83 American Bankr. L.J.. 297 (Issue 2 2009), and the National Association of Women Judges published her book, The Bankruptcy Card and How to Play It (©2003, as updated), which focuses on practical solutions to bankruptcy issues frequently confronted by federal and state non-bankruptcy judges. DONALD L. GAFFNEY is a partner in the Phoenix office of the law firm of Snell & Wilmer L.L.P., where he concentrates his practice in the areas of bankruptcy, reorganization and workout law, privacy law and electronic communications. In June of 2006, Mr. Gaffney was the first federal Consumer Privacy Ombudsman appointed in a case involving internet companies running official Amber Alert Systems. In addition, he represents a syndicated lenders group in Capital Pacific Homes multi-state receivership (2008 to present) and is the attorney for Komatsu, the largest equipment supplier in ASARCO Chapter 11 (2005 to present). Mr. Gaffney earned his B.A. degree from Austin College and his J.D. degree, with honors, from the University of Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Arizona (twice chair, Bankruptcy Section), the American Bar Association (Committee on Uniform Commercial Code 1980 to present) and he is a Keeton Fellow at the University of Texas Law School. ILENE J. LASHINSKY was first appointed as U.S. Trustee for Region 14 in November 2002. She has also served as Interim U.S. Trustee for Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and Alaska (Region 18). Before her appointment as U.S. Trustee for Region 14, Ms. Lashinsky's professional experience included practicing commercial and bankruptcy law at Streich Lang, Davis & Lowe, PC, and Hymson & Goldstein, PC; serving as resident bankruptcy advisor to the CFED-USAID Macedonia Commercial Law Project, where she assisted in workouts of Macedonian businesses and advised on that nation's transition to a free market economy; serving as Director of Continuing Legal Education for the State Bar of Arizona; law clerk to Arizona Supreme Court Justice Lorna Lockwood; and teaching as an adjunct faculty member for Arizona State University's Melikian Center for Russian and East European Studies. Ms. Lashinsky received her law degree, cum laude, from Arizona State University College of Law in Tempe, Arizona, and her undergraduate degree from Arizona State University. ROBERT A. MACKENZIE is a sole practitioner in Phoenix, where he practices in the area of bankruptcy. He is a member of the State Bar of Arizona (Bankruptcy Section) and the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees. Mr. Mackenzie is also a panel trustee for the district of Arizona. He earned his B.S. degree from Arizona State University and his J.D. degree from Detroit College of Law and Michigan State University. MODERATOR - DAVID W. ENGELMAN is an experienced attorney whose practice focuses on commercial law. Mr. Engelman has engaged in a wide variety of areas over his career, but concentrates his practice on insolvency issues, debt resolution, business matters, and banking and credit union law. Much of his practice is in the United States Bankruptcy Court handling primarily business matters. He has a significant practice involving the defense of avoidance actions in the bankruptcy court. Mr. Engelman handles complex business disputes, drafts commercial loans for lenders, and advises credit unions on issues ranging from bankruptcy to regulatory matters. He received his B.A. degree from Antioch College and his J.D. degree from John Marshall Law. Mr. Engelman is licensed to practice before all state and federal courts of Arizona. He is a longtime member of the Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar of Arizona. He has spoken at numerous seminars on bankruptcy law and consumer lending regulations. Mr. Engelmanis a member of the State Bar of Arizona and the Maricopa County Bar Association.
