This is a re-broadcast of the original session delivered by Ms. Megan D. Engelhardt and Ms. Lynda J. Nelson on October 13, 2011 at the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, Inc. (NFPA) 2011 Annual Convention. No matter what area of law you work in, issues such as client confidentiality, unauthorized practice of law (UPL) and conflicts of interest expose you to the potential for ethical violations. Receive insightful instruction into the ways that these issues arise in your day-to-day work as a paralegal, and practical guidelines on how to deal with these situations.

MEGAN D. ENGELHARDT has been an assistant director with the Minnesota Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility since December 2007. Her responsibilities include the investigation and prosecution of complaints of unprofessional conduct against Minnesota lawyers; recommending file dispositions to the director; screening of complaints received by the director; and drafting briefs, admonitions, panel and Supreme Court pleadings. Ms. Engelhardt earned her B.A. degree from Michigan State University in 2000 and her J.D. degree from William Mitchell College of Law in 2003. Before coming to the OLPR, she clerked for the Honorable Mark A. Munger in Duluth, Minnesota and was a staff attorney for Indian Legal Assistance in Duluth, Minnesota, where she provided representation to low-income clients in criminal, child protection and family matters. LYNDA J. NELSON is the paralegal supervisor at the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility, where she specializes in ethics. Ms. Nelson is responsible for investigation, including trust account auditing; drafting of charging and dispositional documents; litigation preparation and assistance; and supervision of paralegals. She conducts legal and factual research. Ms. Nelson earned her B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota. She has lectured on the topic of legal ethics on numerous occasions to paralegals and paralegal students, and currently teaches ethics to paralegal students at Hamline University. Ms. Nelson is a member of the Minnesota Paralegal Association (treasurer/director of finance).
